My new obsession. The love of my life. The tastiest meal that I have made in a long time. A meal that feels like a treat but is really healthy af.
I don’t know what it is about smoothie bowls, but I have literally been obsessed with them for the past two weeks. It all started when my mom and I bought Chex cereal for a “healthy” Kit-Kat bar recipe. After making the Kit-Kat bars, we had left over Chex, and I discovered that cereal is the perfect snack. And you all know me, I LOVE my snacks. More often than not I want a crunchy snack, if it’s crunchy and sweet that’s even better. If it is crunchy, sweet, and I can eat a high volume of it without eating a days worth of calories, then my friends I have hit the jackpot. Cereal is the jackpot of snacks for me. And I haven’t really eaten cereal in a long time. When I was living in my sorority house, dry cereal was a readily available snack, so I would eat it then, but other than that I hadn’t really eaten cereal for a meal since high school.
During high school and middle school I had my staple breakfast meals: cereal, or yogurt, usually with a banana. I usually stuck with multi-grain cheerios or anything by Kashi (because their cereals are SO crunchy). But my all time favorite cereal was, and still is, Captain Crunch. Omg Captain Crunch is my shiz. I could eat it straight from the box, in a huge bowl with milk, over yogurt, anything. And all of the flavors are good. Peanut butter Captain Crunch (mm), Wildberry (so good), regular (even better).
I thought to myself, “wow, cereal is so good, why don’t I put it on top of a smoothie and eat it like it’s a bowl of cereal?” And that is exactly what I did. I blended up a smoothie, poured it into a bowl, topped it with my cereal, and ate it just like it was a regular old bowl of cereal and milk. But it wasn’t. IT WAS SO MUCH BETTER. If you get the right consistency of smoothie, this is like fro-yo. You guys, I don’t know how it took me so long to discover smoothie bowls. They are a nutrient dense, tasty, crunchy, sweet treat but you can eat them as a meal and feel satisfied! They are amazing.
How I Make Them…
I have discovered that using frozen fruits and vegetables will make your smoothie very thick, and very similar to frozen yogurt.
- Step 1: The first thing that I do is chuck a scoop of protein powder into my blender. I have been using Muscle Pharm Cookies and Cream protein lately. But I also love Unico Nutrition’s Apollo Protein
- Step 2: then pour in about 2/3-3/4 cup of vanilla almond milk. Or use whatever kind of milk you like.
- Step 3: add frozen greens, and usually half of a frozen banana, at this point you can add in whatever fruits and veggies that you like.
- Step 4: Blend it all up, then pour it into a big bowl
- Step 5: Then the best part; I pull out my favorite cereal from the cabinet (Captain Crunch at the moment), and put one serving on top of my smoothie.
- Step 6: Sometimes if I am feeling crazy I’ll add coconut chips, chocolate chips, or nuts.
- Step 7: Then I mix it all up and eat it.

Other Things Smoothie Bowls are Great For:
If you have a hard time getting your fruits and vegetables in, smoothie bowls are the way to go! Just chuck any kind of greens in there: spinach, kale, avocado, zucchini, cauliflower (I have never tried cauliflower in a smoothie, but have heard good things). And you can throw in any kinds of fruits to offset the vegetable taste. I personally tend to just use greens and banana because my protein powder is so sweet that it offsets the vegetable taste. But I also love fruits and vegetables, so I don’t have an issue eating them any which way.
They are also very versatile. You can eat thick smoothies in bowl form, or you can make them a little runnier (by adding more liquid or ice), put them in a to go cup and take it with you to run errands or go to work.
